Strengthening of teacher education programs
The establishment of a visiting professorship for Elementary Music Pedagogy (EMP) represents an important step towards strengthening the music education programs – particularly the Master's program in Instrumental Pedagogy – and the pedagogical aspects of the artistic degree programs at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts (HfMDK). This position was filled by elementary music pedagogue Nathalie Dahme for the winter semester of 2022/2023.

New visiting professorship expands educational offerings
Elementary music education sees itself as an artistic-pedagogical subject that focuses on all people with their diverse possibilities of artistic expression in music, language and movement.

In elementary music practice, people can experience the diverse facets of music in a group and learn creative, innovative ways of dealing with music.

The creation of the visiting professorship gives students the opportunity to participate in both theory- and practice-oriented seminars and exercises in the field of EMP and to gain insights into the diverse fields of work of music educators.

Numerous collaborations with Frankfurt educational institutions
Visiting professor Nathalie Dahme is initiating numerous collaborations with Frankfurt educational institutions for this purpose. For example, there are weekly music lessons in a neighboring kindergarten. The students develop novel and innovative concepts, prepare them methodically, and implement them with the children.
In the winter semester of 2023/2024, there is also the opportunity to develop and perform an elementary music theater piece with primary school children. The unique aspect of this seminar is the development of methods for group work that, on the one hand, include the children and their ideas, work in a process-oriented manner, and, on the other hand, never lose sight of the goal – a workshop performance. Students from various degree programs and disciplines will also lead improvisation sessions with children and/or adults.
Through similar projects, students were able to gain pedagogical experience with over 200 children and adults from Frankfurt during the 2022/2023 academic year, transforming the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts (HfMDK) into a vibrant hub for musical encounters. The aim is to sustainably establish elementary music pedagogy in its full breadth within the HfMDK's curriculum. This will bring the societal relevance of music education programs outside of general education schools into sharp focus for both students and the university, as the communication of arts is gaining ever greater importance in society.
