Strengthening pedagogical courses

With the visiting professorship for elementary music education (EMP), an important building block was laid to strengthen the music education courses - in particular the master's program in instrumental education - and the pedagogical aspects in the artistic courses at the HfMDK Frankfurt. For the 2022/2023 winter semester, this was filled with elementary music teacher Nathalie Dahme.

New visiting professorship expands educational offerings

Elementary music education sees itself as an artistic and educational subject that focuses on all people with their diverse possibilities for artistic expression in music, language and movement.

In elementary music practice, people can experience the diverse facets of music in a group and experience creative, creative ways of dealing with music.

With the creation of the visiting professorship, students have the opportunity to take part in both theory- and practice-oriented seminars and exercises in the field of EMP and to gain insights into the diverse fields of work of music educators.

Numerous collaborations with Frankfurt educational institutions

Visiting professor Nathalie Dahme initiates numerous collaborations with Frankfurt educational institutions.
For example, there are weekly music lessons in a neighboring kindergarten. The students develop novel and innovative concepts, prepare them methodically and carry them out with the children. In the winter semester 2023/2024 there is also the opportunity to develop and perform an elementary musical theater with primary school children. The special thing about this seminar is the development of methods for group work that, on the one hand, include the children with their ideas, work in a process-oriented manner but, on the other hand, never lose sight of the goal - a workshop performance. Students from different courses and departments will also organize improvisation lessons with children and adults.

Through similar projects, students were able to gain educational experience with over 200 children and adults from Frankfurt in the 2022/2023 academic year, making the HfMDK a lively place for musical encounters. The aim is to sustainably establish elementary music education in its full breadth in the teaching of the HfMDK. In this way, the social relevance of music education offerings outside of general schools is brought into the focus of students and the university, as the teaching of art is becoming increasingly important in society.
