Development of an international Applied Liberal Arts degree program at Fulda University of Applied Sciences
The project idea stems partly from shared experiences (Domke/Fischer at the ZDK) and partly from personal observations regarding the potential of interdisciplinary, project-based study content. The focus is on analytical, media-related, organizational, and socio-communicative skills, which are highly relevant for numerous modern professional profiles. While "Liberal Arts" programs, currently only available at universities in Germany, encompass some of these aspects, from an applied science perspective they lack a concrete, scientifically "applied" foundation. Fulda University of Applied Sciences, as a research-intensive, interdisciplinary campus university, possesses an excellent structure whose potential for interdisciplinary academic training has not yet been fully realized.
This is where the project idea comes in: We want to analyze how we can establish the first and currently only "Applied Liberal Arts" degree program at a university of applied sciences in Germany at Fulda University of Applied Sciences. Through targeted outreach to colleagues from all departments at Fulda University of Applied Sciences and an in-depth analysis of existing Liberal Arts programs, particularly those operating in the Anglo-American world, as well as further exploration of project-based teaching and current approaches to interdisciplinary teaching, a structure for the potential implementation and establishment of the degree program will be developed during the project period. The content of such a degree program will also be aligned with the core principles and mission statement of Fulda University of Applied Sciences. In addition to the content, the project will focus specifically on developing the structure, organization, and integration of this innovative degree program into the existing structure of Fulda University of Applied Sciences.
