Start smartly
It's the modules from the first semesters that determine later academic success. However, mathematics, electrical engineering, engineering mechanics, physics, and computer science pose a significant challenge for many first-year students – often due to a lack of prior knowledge, an underestimation of the complexity, or the use of inappropriate learning methods. At Start smart!, the modules of the first two semesters are therefore spread over four semesters and supplemented by individual support – the mentoring program. In small groups, there is ample time to learn the fundamentals. Additional courses help with organizing studies. Practical projects provide insights into typical engineering work methods.
Start smart! , the study of adapted speed (SaG) – is a supplementary course of study for the Bachelor's degree programs at the Department of Electrical Engineering at Fulda University of Applied Sciences and is currently offered in the following four degree programs:
- Renewable energies (RE)
- Electrical and Information Technology (ET)
- Mechatronics (MT)
- Industrial Engineering (I)
The standard period of study thus extends over nine semesters, which – if eligible – are fully eligible for BAföG funding. From the 5th semester onwards, the course of study corresponds to that of a regular course of study from the 3rd semester onwards.
The focus is on the foundational subjects. In small groups, students work on additional practice exercises, understand the connections between concepts, and address potential weaknesses. Practical application is further emphasized through additional practical projects, transforming seemingly abstract tasks into tangible objects. During the introductory week at the start of studies, a comprehensive information session on the "Start smart!" program is held, along with a general self-assessment (placement test with basic questions on the core subjects). Based on the test results, students receive a recommendation for an individual consultation to determine whether the regular or the adapted study program is the right option for them.
