Preparation and introduction of a certificate program at JLU Giessen

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) is collaborating with the Center for Foreign Language and Career-Oriented Competencies (ZfbK) to develop a certificate program as part of a general studies program. This program will be open to all students at JLU. In this way, students—even those outside their own degree program—will have the opportunity to benefit from the broad range of subjects and extensive academic expertise at JLU.

Preparation and introduction of a certificate program at JLU Giessen

Multifaceted societal, economic, and technological challenges necessitate study programs that transcend individual disciplines. Not only specific subject knowledge, but also skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and flexibility are in demand. In a globalized world, intercultural competence and communication are also essential. Certificate programs allow students to pursue further education flexibly and adapt their study interests to current trends and developments; this is particularly important in a rapidly changing professional landscape. Against this backdrop, JLU is striving to further develop its existing study, advising, and support services toward a more differentiated, target-group-oriented range of offerings.

The aim of the project is to combine various existing offerings at JLU Giessen and supplement them with new offerings to create a flexible certificate program in the sense of a Studium Generale, which enables students in all degree programs at JLU to set individual priorities and prepare as precisely as possible for their future professional life.

The project duration includes, among other things, the (further) development of a certificate program focusing on the future-oriented topics of the LAS degree program: digitalization, sustainability, and societal change. In addition to the conceptual development of various certificate tracks, the project also centers on drafting study regulations and a framework for certificates at JLU. A service center for the certificate program will organize and administer the certificate offerings. Furthermore, a website will be created to provide information about the certificate programs, present them clearly, and serve as a central point of contact for interested students.
