For over 200 years, the Städelschule in Frankfurt has seen itself as an open place for artistic experimentation, international exchange, and individual development. Its international student body from 40 nations creates diverse perspectives, but also unique challenges. Therefore, the initiative "Art and Life – From the First Step to a Professional Future" was founded. It provides comprehensive and easily accessible support for international students – from their initial contact with the university to their entry into professional life.
Student Life Cycle: Final Exam / After Graduation
Target group: Graduates / Alumni
University: Städelschule (University of Fine Arts)
At the end of their studies, students increasingly focus on their professional future. Many of our international graduates aspire to a freelance artistic career in Germany. To prepare them specifically for this, we offer practical workshops: topics such as applying to the German social security fund for artists (Künstlersozialkasse), invoicing, health insurance, residency rights, and applying for residencies or scholarships are taught by experienced professionals from the art and consulting sectors.
At the same time, participation in the graduate exhibition offers an initial platform for professional visibility. It opens doors to the art world, strengthens self-confidence, and facilitates the entry into independent artistic work.
A particular focus is placed on preparing students for independent artistic practice – an essential component of the Städelschule's profile. The initiative empowers students to actively shape their artistic careers through independent projects, exhibitions, and grant applications. In doing so, it makes a valuable contribution to strengthening the creative industries and cultural diversity in Germany.
International alumni enrich not only the Städelschule, but the entire German cultural landscape. They bring new ideas, perspectives, and networks. With Art and Life, we create the structural conditions that enable these talents to develop their potential and find their voice in society.
