A space for collaborative, flexible and competency-based teaching and learning

Previously a boring seminar room – now a contemporary, innovative new teaching and learning space. This is the "CoLAB" – a space for collaborative, flexible, and competency-oriented teaching and learning. Freely positionable partitions and flexible furniture create adaptable learning islands for different work styles (room-within-a-room concept). And what's forbidden elsewhere – in the CoLAB, the magnetic walls and tables can be painted and written on…

Multifunctionality and flexibility are the focus of the new learning environment at HGU. Whether for working group meetings, workshops or seminars, whether working in small groups, in plenary sessions or individually – the CoLAB can be configured as desired in just a few steps.

For this purpose, tables and chairs are equipped with casters, are stackable, and very lightweight. Height-adjustable, magnetic, and writable tables that can also be used as whiteboards, writable and magnetic walls, as well as connections for laptops and tablets including Wi-Fi, ensure a modern teaching and learning environment.

And if you've forgotten your device or the battery is dead – CoLAB also provides free loaner devices. The demand for such a flexible concept is so high that another former seminar room will be converted into a CoLAB 2 in 2026.

Ideal for interactive and engaging teaching formats with group work, inverted classrooms, and poster sessions, combined with traditional lectures. The teaching and learning atmosphere, as well as the acoustics, are very pleasant; I have the impression that the students are more relaxed in the room and participate more actively. The setup can be quickly and flexibly reconfigured, making it perfect for combined events (e.g., seminar-style lectures). The range of media options is also excellent.
