Writing with AI

The "Writing with AI" initiative aims to explore the potential and risks of using AI in the scientific writing process and to provide guidance to students and teachers for a critically reflective and responsible use of AI in academic writing and reading.

Student Life Cycle: Starting studies, specialization phase and final exam

Target group: Prospective students, current students, lecturers and staff at the university

University: Goethe University Frankfurt am Main

Writing with AI

The Writing Center researches student writing with AI and offers programs on this topic to students and faculty at Goethe University Frankfurt to
promote a critically reflective and responsible use of AI in academic writing and reading. The goal is to harness the potential of AI for academic writing while simultaneously mitigating the risks of uncontrolled AI use.

In order to align these support services with the actual AI usage of students and widespread knowledge and attitudes, two nationwide student surveys on writing with AI conducted in 2023 and 2025.

The results reveal a need for information and exchange regarding the specific use of AI and its
limitations in academic writing. Based on this, the Writing Center's entire range of services is being expanded to include continuously updated offerings on AI.
These offerings for students include individual writing consultations, where students can receive guidance from student tutors on using AI in specific text projects, and extracurricular workshops in German and English for both AI novices and experienced users. These workshops provide information on the use of AI in academic reading and writing and encourage discussion and reflection. For flexible and easily accessible self-study, guides on the responsible use of AI and its labeling have been developed, as well as a self-learning module on the critical engagement with AI

To offer students insights into how their professors write with AI and their stance on it, a compilation on the topic was also created within the interview series 'Writing Conversations – How STEM Professors Write'.

The program for instructors includes seminar-integrated training sessions , available in German and English, which can be booked for individual sessions. These sessions cover topics such as the responsible integration of AI into the writing or reading process, or the reflection and documentation of AI use. In addition, workshops on writing and reading pedagogy with varying topics related to AI use are offered, for example, "Teaching AI-supported writing" or special workshops upon request from individual departments. Furthermore, a framework for developing guidelines for the use of AI in writing tasks is available, as well as sections on writing within the general recommendations for dealing with generative AI in higher education, which are scheduled for updating. Additional guidelines are in preparation, such as those on writing pedagogy models for the AI-supported writing process. In addition, instructors receive support through consultation and networking in developing subject-specific measures, particularly within the Community of Practice of the Generative AI Working Group and through the training of AI guides who work within the departments. The services are in high demand – for example, half of the approximately 100 seminar-integrated training courses on AI topics offered annually are now booked. The writing center has already supported several departments in developing subject-specific guidelines and contributes to the debate among students, lecturers, and researchers about the responsible use of AI in writing.

I've realized that using AI often reveals where I still feel insecure in the writing process.
